O James Garden

Message from the IHPBA President

The last 9 months have seen a lot of work behind the scenes. Our new administrators, Camilla O’Brien and Alison Shamwana from ACS Global, have had a huge impact since they were appointed to replace Crow Segal. They have provided quality support for the workings of the executive, council and our various committees.  The rather mundane process of updating our contracts, bylaws, congress bid manuals and committee infrastructure will be invaluable and pay dividends in the future. The Association has a relatively secure financial base and our membership continues to grow.

However, to be successful in the future, we need to deliver effective communication to the membership. Our website, although functional, has looked dated for some time and with our change of administrative support, there has been opportunity to effect radical change. From next month you will have access to a completely redesigned website with improved access to all the key information about our association activities. In the next few weeks, members will see the product of an extensive amount of work supported by our Publications Committee under Steve Strasberg’s leadership. By May, you will have access to our new educational platform, myHPB. This should allow one click access to the journal and additional educational resource in the coming months. Ideally, this will incorporate quality material that has been identified from our world congresses but we wish members to bring their own resource to stimulate discussion and interaction on the discussion boards. Finally, we will be able to deliver continuing medical education (CME) that members may find of value as evidence of their continuing professional development.

Your Scientific Committee under the Chairmanship of Professor Ronnie Poon is now finalising a full and exciting programme for our next World Congress in Seoul, Korea. SG Lee and his Local Organising Committee promise to deliver an outstanding Congress with live operating and a full postgraduate programme.

I would urge you to ensure that you have renewed your membership and encourage others to join our Association. We appreciate that there is need to demonstrate the benefits of being affiliated to the association if it is to retain and build on its membership. We hope that our efforts in this coming year will be appreciated and that we now have a means whereby the membership can contact us directly to tell us if we have got it right!

James Garden, President

Secretary-General's Report

It is with great pleasure that I write my first report as Secretary-General of the IHPBA. It is an honor to have been nominated for this position and the responsibility it entails. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor, John Windsor from Auckland for his efforts over the previous 4 years.

The last 8 months has been a period of significant transition for the association. As mentioned in the President’s report, ACS Global have taken over from Crow Segal as our administrator. The skill and energy of Camilla O’Brien and Alison Shamwana will keep the Executive and Council on track to deliver for the IHPBA.

The membership of the IHPBA remains strong but the actual number of members is significantly less than the number of attendees at the international and regional congresses. I would encourage members to persuade their non-member colleagues to join, not only the IHPBA but also their regional and national societies. As outlined in the President’s report, we are aiming to increase the value and benefits of membership.

I had the pleasure of attending the Americas HPB meeting in Miami in late February and will be attending the E-AHPBA meeting in Belgrade in May. Last week was the A-P HPBA meeting in Shanghai which was from all reports a very successful conference. All of these meetings are very informative and extremely valuable for networking as well as educational content. In future years it would be valuable to spread these regional association meetings out across the calendar year and the councils of the Regional Association could consider some coordination of the scheduling.

Finally, the next IHPBA international meeting is in Seoul, South Korea from March 23-27, 2014. I would strongly encourage you to diarize these dates and plan to attend, what promises to be, a most exciting congress.

Rob Padbury, Secretary-General

2013 Warren Fellowship Report

The Warren Foundation was proud to sponsor the IHPBA Warren Fellowship again this year. The goal of this fellowship is to promote collaborative scientific discovery in hepatic, biliary, or pancreatic diseases through support of clinical and laboratory research for a young investigator in a laboratory outside the applicant’s own department and country.

Our 2013 Fellowship recipient, Dr. John Stotesbury Hammond from University of Nottingham spent time in the laboratory of Professors Arthur Revhaug and Kim Mortensen at University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø.

His research is addressing post-hepatectomy liver failure through modulation hepatic blood flow.

He first studied an experimental model for small-for-size livers, modulating hepatic blood flow in order to attenuate the negative consequences of a small liver remnant. His research will continue with chronic studies that will start later this year.

We are inspired by the hard work of our recipient of this year toward fulfilling  the mission and goal of the fellowship. The Warren Foundation will continue striving to provide the type of grant funds and support to advance scientific discovery and HPB diseases.

Kenneth Warren Foundation Report

The Kenneth Warren Fellowship was initiated by the IHPBA more than a decade ago. A year before Ken died in 2001, he contacted IHPBA President James Toouli to arrange support for a young IHPBA member to study for a year with a senior IHPBA mentor from another country. The first fellow, N. Tjarda van Heek, from the Netherlands, was studying at Johns Hopkins when she visited Ken shortly before he died.

When Ken's initial gift of US $100,000 had been spent on five fellows, his children Tom, George and Sally set up the IHPBA Kenneth Warren foundation in 2006 with the assistance of IHPBA President Henry Pitt. Ongoing generous gifts by the Warren family, Wiley and Blackwell, the IHPBA, the E-AHPBA, the AP-HPBA, as well as the IHPBA leadership and members have subsequently funded Warren fellows annually. The research performed by the Warren Fellows has been outstanding, and many are destined to become future leaders of HPB surgery.

Applications for the Warren Fellowship are due on April 30 each year. The IHPBA Research Committee chooses the recipient. Applicants are judged on their background, their research proposal and their IHPBA mentor. The Warren Fellow is currently supported by US $20,000 and usually begins in July each year. Donations to the IHPBA Kenneth Warren Foundation may be made on the IHPBA website www.IHPBA.org.
